Hello, I'm Steve Joyce. Welcome to this absolutely esoteric website of mine!! To the best of my knowledge there aren't many on the world-wide-web quite like it. There are many sites devoted to science fiction. Quite a few cover science fiction film. And there are several excellent sites out there on silent film. But this may be the only place online devoted to silent science fiction film. Not only that, it's a website devoted totally to reading silent science fiction film.
Let me explain. Like many folks, I was amazed when I first viewed the film Metropolis. From there, I sought out as many videos as I could with a science fiction element from the silent era. There were plenty more films with this theme than you might imagine. But only a small percentage still exists. An even smaller percentage is available in video format of which many are with un-translated subtitles.
Frustrated in obtaining the actual films and in understanding others, I began seeking out source novels and plays, scripts, film catalog summaries and the like. This not only helped me fill in the gaps; it also helped me appreciate along the way some great "gaslight" authors.
Each time I'd read a new item, I'd write up a brief article and post it to a couple of my favorite message boards. This was in order to seek out others with similar interests. It was also such new territory to me that it gave me an opportunity to create a "diary", if you will, of my readings.
I'm a big fan of this stuff but I'm an amateur researcher all the way. So these articles are written fairly informally. I've gathered them all together here for the first time and I hope that you will enjoy them. Feedback is always appreciated.
