" 'She' Adapted by James Black from the All-British Film Production"
This 3 page very short story appeared in the May 13, 1916 issue of Pictures & the Picturegoer. (an old British movie publication.) It was hard for me to locate. But by hook-or-crook I was able to find out that The British Library had a run of this magazine and was able to obtain a photocopy of the pages I was interested in.
Somehow Black managed to condense H.R. Haggard's classic tale as what-I-guess is some sort of promotional tie-in to the film of the same year. Unlike the novel, he starts off in ancient Egypt to reveal the background story of She and her love Kallikrates. Quickly, he jumps "2,000 years later" and narrates how She meets up with Leo Vincey who she believes to be Kallikrates reincarnated.
The movie was well received and was viewed by over 2 million. One of these was Haggard himself.
The film is long gone. However, Black's writings are accompanied by 3 scenes from the film captioned as follows:
-"Alice Delysia as 'She' "
-" 'She who must be obeyed' demands your presence at her palace."
-"You must pay the penalty of disobedience." She cried.
At least something remains for posterity.
